Why Is Bing Getting More Popular 2026 | Growth, AI, Data & Key Facts

Why Is Bing Getting More Popular

Bing’s worldwide search share reached 5.29% in September 2026, up from 4.50% in August, and its North American share stood at 9.84%, as Microsoft’s Edge browser, Windows defaults and Copilot-powered search send more desktop users to it. Microsoft’s search advertising revenue, excluding traffic acquisition costs, rose 10% in the June 2026 quarter, yet Google still holds 89.94% of worldwide searches, so Bing’s gains are real but come from a small base.

Bing’s Growth in 2026 – Introduction

Why Is Bing Getting More Popular when Google still handles about nine of every ten searches? The short answer is defaults. Microsoft puts Bing inside Windows, Edge, Copilot and Xbox, and every one of those surfaces now carries an AI assistant. People who never chose Bing end up using it, and the monthly numbers show those habits adding up. September 2026 gave Bing its strongest reading in months.

The long answer is more interesting. Bing also supplies web results behind other companies’ AI chatbots, and workplaces that run on Microsoft 365 keep their staff inside Microsoft’s search tools by default. Google remains far ahead, especially on phones, so the story is one of steady gains on desktop rather than a shift in power. This report covers the market share data, regional gaps, Edge, Copilot, advertising revenue and AI search, one data table at a time.

Google’s grip is firm but slipped in September. It held 91.27% in June and 91.31% in July, then fell to 91.10% in August and 89.94% in September, its lowest reading in this set. Bing took most of that ground, rising from 4.50% to 5.29%. One published analysis of StatCounter’s series calls 5.29% the best single month in the data and puts Bing’s January-to-September 2026 average at 4.85%, its highest ever.

The rest of the field barely moved. Yahoo held between 1.23% and 1.36%, and Yandex ran from 0.79% to 1.31%. DuckDuckGo stayed below 1% every month, from 0.65% to 0.74%, and Baidu stayed below 1% from 0.43% to 0.62%. Privacy features alone have not lifted DuckDuckGo, while Bing’s integration with Windows and AI has.

Bing does best where Microsoft’s products dominate daily work. In China it holds 21.76%, second to Baidu at 46.65%, because foreign engines face limits there. In the United States Bing reached 9.89% in September, and North America came in at 9.84%, with Google at 85.46%, Yahoo at 2.54% and DuckDuckGo at 1.63%.

The yearly numbers back the monthly ones. Bing’s US average for the first nine months of 2026 is 9.53%, its highest yearly figure since 2014, when it averaged 9.90%. In the UK Bing held 6.08%, a bit above the worldwide 5.29%. The gap between the US and the rest of the world reflects the US habit of using Windows PCs at work and gaming consoles at home.

Source: StatCounter Global Stats; Bloomberg via Yahoo Tech, 2024; Exposure Ninja; MPG One, 2024-2026.

The long view shows slow but steady progress. Bing closed 2023 with 3.4% of worldwide search while Google held 91.6%, and critics said Copilot had not moved the needle. They were right for a while: Bing stood at 3.32% in February 2024. A year later it reached 3.95%, and by June 2026 it was at 4.68%. The climb from 3.32% to 5.29% took about two and a half years.

Google’s side of the ledger moved less. It fell from 91.6% at the end of 2023 to 89.94% in September 2026, so it gave up less than Bing gained, with Yahoo, Yandex and others absorbing the difference. The 2026 year-to-date average of 4.85% is the highest annual figure for Bing in the series, according to one published analysis. The trend is real, but it is measured in tenths of a point per year, not in sudden jumps.

Edge is the engine. It holds 14.64% of desktop, tablet and console browsing worldwide and 11.14% of desktop alone, but only 5.36% of all platforms because phones run mostly Chrome and Safari. Bing is the default search engine in Edge, so Edge’s desktop strength carries straight into Bing’s numbers. In North America, Edge holds 7.45% of desktop browsing against Chrome’s 54.09% and Safari’s 30.36%.

Microsoft says AI products are doing the rest. In 2025 its head of search, Jordi Ribas, said Bing and Edge had gained share for a fourth straight year in Comscore US data and StatCounter worldwide data. He credited Copilot Search in Bing and Bing’s role powering web search for third-party chatbots including ChatGPT and Meta AI. Defaults in Windows and workplace Microsoft 365 setups put Bing in front of users who never switch.

Edge is a clear third behind Chrome and, in some regions, Safari. Chrome leads every row, from 54.09% in North America to 69.39% worldwide on all platforms. Safari is strongest in North America at 30.36% because of Apple’s installed base, and Edge trails there at 7.45%. In Europe, Edge holds 7.29% of desktop browsing against Safari’s 19.94%.

The worldwide desktop, tablet and console reading shows why Microsoft keeps pushing. Edge reaches 14.64% there, well above its 5.36% on all platforms, and Firefox sits at 6.11% and 2.98% in the same settings. Every point of Edge share carries Bing along as the default search engine. So Edge is the quiet reason Bing’s desktop numbers look much healthier than its mobile numbers, and why Microsoft keeps tying Copilot to the browser.

Search revenue keeps growing, but more slowly. Microsoft’s search advertising revenue, excluding traffic acquisition costs, rose 10% in the June 2026 quarter after 12% in March and 10% in December. Earlier quarters were stronger, at 16% and 21%. Microsoft attributes the growth to higher revenue per search across Edge and Bing and higher volume. It guided to mid-single-digit growth next quarter because of third-party partnerships.

The ad business now props up a weak segment. More Personal Computing revenue fell 4% to $12.9 billion as Windows OEM and devices dropped 7% and Xbox dropped 10%. Search was the main growth driver in that division. Microsoft overall earned $90.0 billion in the quarter, up 18%, and the Microsoft facts and statistics in the US report covers the cloud and AI numbers behind that growth.

AI is changing search without replacing it. Pew found that 9% of US adults get news from AI chatbots at least sometimes, and the Reuters Institute found 6% weekly in the US and 10% worldwide. Pew also found that users click a link in 8% of searches that show an AI summary, against 15% of searches without one. Fewer clicks mean the search engine that supplies the answer matters more than the site that ranks.

That works in Bing’s favor. Microsoft told investors that Copilot revenue accelerated by more than 60% from the prior quarter and that GitHub Copilot reached 50 million users. Bing supplies web results behind several third-party assistants, so some growth comes through products that never show the Bing name. The AI search statistics report tracks the chatbots, AI overviews and zero-click behavior behind this shift.

The device split explains almost all of the gap. Google holds 95.68% of mobile search because it is the default on Android and iPhone. On desktop its share falls to 78.12%, and Bing holds 14.62%. Bing’s mobile share is only 0.60%, so its desktop share runs about 14.7 times higher. Gains on desktop move Bing’s overall number faster than any mobile win would.

Desktop figures differ by setting, so read them with care. StatCounter’s desktop-only reading for August was 8.84%, while other readings in the 10-15% range include tablets and consoles, where Bing is the default engine. What Americans actually type is a different question, and the top Bing searches in the US report lists the queries users send through it. Either way, the lesson holds: Bing grows where Microsoft controls the screen.

Bing’s strength follows English-speaking markets with heavy Microsoft use. In March 2026 it held 9.85% in the United States, 9.46% in Canada and 8.71% in Australia. The United Kingdom was lower at 5.88%, though by September its share had edged up to 6.08%. Offices in these countries run Windows and Microsoft 365, and Edge is the default browser on both.

India is the counterexample. Bing holds only 1.45% there while Google takes 97.14%, because Android dominates and Chrome is the default on most phones. China is the other outlier at 21.76%. The pattern says that Bing’s growth is not a global switch away from Google. It is a steady gain in places where a Windows PC is still the main way to get online.
