US Midterm Election Results by County 2026 – Introduction
US Midterm Election Results by County are the numbers every analyst, reporter and campaign staffer wants first. Voters went to the polls on November 3, 2026, and Democrats had taken the House and the Senate by the next morning. County returns show where that happened. They show which rural counties moved, which suburbs held and which border counties swung back after the 2024 election. This report tracks those shifts using the latest projections and exit polling available on November 4, 2026.
County vote tallies take days to certify. Election offices in more than 3,000 counties still count mail ballots, resolve provisional ballots and run audits. Alaska and Mississippi remain uncalled in the Senate, and roughly 75 House races are open. This report lists confirmed race results now and flags every contest still in play. Exact county vote shares will follow as state election offices certify them.

The table shows how far the map moved. Democrats won a Kansas Senate seat for the first time in 94 years and a Texas Senate seat for the first time in 38 years. Georgia elected its first Democratic governor since 1998. Trump’s 38% approval in exit polls set a midterm low, and gas at $4.15 a gallon was the highest of any Election Day on record.
County administration facts matter too. North Carolina extended voting at 5 precincts in 4 counties (Columbus, Hertford, Lenoir and Wilson) out of about 2,625 polling places statewide. Statewide results posted 45 minutes late. Iowa flipped 3 of its 4 House seats, which makes it the clearest county-level story of the night.

The House numbers are still moving. CBS News projected a Democratic majority at 10:15 p.m. ET, and a majority needs 218 seats. An early Wednesday count showed a net Democratic gain of at least 13 seats with 69 races open, while CBS News counted about 75 open at 4:19 a.m. ET. The two counts reflect different reporting times. Expect both figures to shrink as county clerks finish.

Republicans held Florida. Donalds beat Jolly and extends the party’s eight-year hold on the governor’s office. His win makes him the first Black Republican elected governor in U.S. history. Kansas, Nevada and other governor races were still rated lean or competitive when this report was compiled, so they are excluded until called.

Iowa stands out. Democrats flipped 3 of 4 seats, and the head of the Iowa Farmers Union said members voted as if Trump were on the ballot. Pennsylvania’s 1st District shows suburban county strength. Harvie, a Bucks County commissioner, beat Fitzpatrick, who has a history of outperforming other Republicans.
Texas 15th matters because South Texas swung toward Republicans in 2024. Pulido reversed that. In North Carolina, Ager won the 11th after Rep. Chuck Edwards ended his campaign in early August. Ohio’s 7th went Democratic after allegations against Miller, which he denied. Florida Democrats also held redrawn seats, including Castor in the 14th and Moskowitz in the 25th, and Pia Dandiya is projected to win the 22nd.

The exit polls explain the county swings. Trump’s 38% approval is lower than in 2018 and lower than George W. Bush’s in 2006, when his party lost both chambers. About 75% of voters were dissatisfied with the country’s direction. About 6 in 10 said Trump was a factor in their House vote, and Democratic voters were the most motivated by opposition to him.
Prices backed that mood. Gas at $4.15 beat the 2022 record of $3.80 and sat $1.05 above the 2024 level of $3.10. In Maine, 69% said tariffs hurt the local economy. Cost of living drove Jackson’s 33-point margin among voters who named it. These early exit poll figures may change as pollsters finish weighting.

County officials ran the night, and several handled problems. North Carolina’s board met in emergency session and extended hours at 5 precincts after interruptions. State law allows that when voting stops for at least 15 minutes. Statewide results posted 45 minutes later than planned, at about 8:15 p.m. Fulton County told voters that texts about polling place changes did not come from the county. Its real alert system is called FALCON.
The ballot disputes may shape county canvasses. The Justice Department asked California to set aside ballots from more than 20,000 alleged noncitizens and asked Washington to separate up to 400 more. The 9th Circuit reinstated a panel order on Tuesday that lets the department keep making those requests, and 5 judges dissented. Michigan and New Mexico officials also complained about federal monitors. The Justice Department said both issues were resolved or routine.
