Small business credit card processing fees in the US 2026 typically total 1.5% to 3.5% per sale, and flat-rate providers such as Square (2.6% + 15¢ in person) and Stripe (2.9% + 30¢ online) sit at the top of that range. A $38 billion Visa and Mastercard settlement, preliminarily approved on June 9, 2026, would cut average credit interchange by 0.1 percentage point for five years and give merchants new surcharging rights.
Small Business Credit Card Processing Fees in America 2026 – Introduction
Small business credit card processing fees in the US 2026 have three layers: interchange paid to the card-issuing bank, an assessment paid to Visa or Mastercard, and the processor’s markup. Interchange is set by the networks and is not negotiable. Visa’s basic card-present rate is 1.51% + 10¢, and the networks add roughly 0.14%. Visa and Mastercard swipe fees reached $118.8 billion in the US in 2025, up from $111.2 billion in 2024, according to the Merchants Payments Coalition.
For a small shop, the markup and the hidden charges decide the real bill. A flat-rate provider charges the same price on every card, so a $8 coffee costs about 4.5% to process while a $500 sale costs about 2.6%. This report covers published provider rates, interchange, effective rates by ticket size, hidden charges, the 2026 settlement and ways to cut costs. Data run through October 2026.

The chart shows how close the leading flat rates are on the percentage line. PayPal Zettle charges 2.29%, Clover starts at 2.3%, and Stripe Terminal charges 2.7%. The difference between the lowest and highest is 0.41 points, so the fixed fee per transaction often matters as much as the percentage, which the effective rate section below shows.
The table shows how much of the bill is fixed. Interchange, set by the networks, runs from 0.05% + 22¢ on regulated debit to 2.10% + 10¢ or more on premium rewards cards. The settlement does not change that structure. It trims the average by 0.1 point and changes what merchants may do about it, as covered later in this report.

Rates cluster in a narrow band. For a $100 in-person sale, Square’s Free plan costs $2.75, Stripe Terminal $2.75, PayPal $2.38 and Clover $2.40 to $2.70. Online, the price moves up: Stripe $3.20, Square’s Free plan $3.60 and PayPal’s standard checkout $3.98. Square raised its online rate on the Free plan from 2.9% + 30¢ to 3.3% + 30¢ in January 2026, according to a small business payments review.
Fixed fees punish low tickets. PayPal’s 49¢ online fee adds 4.9 points to a $10 sale, and keyed-in cards cost more everywhere, at 3.4% to 3.5%. Stripe charges 4.4% + 30¢ for international cards, which is 1.5 points above its domestic online rate. Cheaper in-person pricing usually comes with a monthly software plan, so a business should add subscription costs before comparing providers.

| Regulated debit | 0.05% + 22¢ | $0.27 |
Source: Visa USA interchange tables (April 2026) as published by Helcim, Host Merchant Services and Clearly Payments. Visa credit assessment is about 0.14%; Mastercard is about 0.13% to 0.14%. Rates change each April and October.
Card type decides interchange. A basic Visa credit card costs $1.61 per $100 in person, while a Signature Preferred rewards card costs $2.20, 37% more. Keying a card in adds about 29 cents per $100 over a swiped basic card. Regulated debit from large banks costs only $0.27 per $100 because of the Durbin cap of 21¢ + 0.05%, plus 1¢ for fraud prevention.
On top of interchange, the networks charge assessments of about 0.14% for Visa credit, so a basic card-present sale costs about $1.75 per $100 before the processor adds anything. A processor that charges $2.75 is therefore keeping about $1.00 per $100. Interchange-plus pricing passes the wholesale cost through and adds a visible markup, which is why it usually beats flat rates for businesses with steady volume.

| $50 | $1.45 | 2.90% |
| $100 | $2.75 | 2.75% |
| $500 | $13.15 | 2.63% |
Source: Calculated from Square’s published in-person rate of 2.6% + 15¢. Effective rate equals total fees divided by sales.
The same rate costs different amounts on different tickets. At 2.6% + 15¢, an $8 sale costs 4.48%, a $50 sale 2.90% and a $500 sale 2.63%. Coffee shops, food trucks and salons with small average tickets pay the most. A business with a $50 average ticket and $20,000 a month in card sales runs about 400 transactions and pays about $580 a month, an effective rate of 2.90%.
Effective rate is the number to track. Divide total monthly fees by total card volume, and include statement, gateway and PCI charges. If the result is more than a few tenths above the quoted rate, hidden charges are doing the work. Businesses with high tickets, such as contractors and retailers selling furniture, should compare interchange-plus quotes, since a flat percentage costs most when the wholesale cost is far below it.

| Mastercard assessment (most transactions) | About 0.1375% | $1.38 |
| Visa international acquirer fee | 0.45% | $4.50 |

| Authorization fee, per transaction | About $0.02–$0.10 | Varies |
Source: Visa and Mastercard fee schedules as published by Allay Payments, Verisave and Clearly Payments, 2026. Rates change by network update and merchant category.
Assessments look small but never go away. Visa charges about 0.14% on credit and 0.13% on debit, and Mastercard about 0.1375% on most transactions, so a business with $240,000 in annual card sales pays about $336 in Visa credit assessments before any markup. Authorization fees of 2¢ to 10¢ per transaction are separate. Flat-rate providers fold these into their headline price, while interchange-plus statements list them as separate lines.
Cross-border cards cost more. Visa’s international acquirer fee is 0.45% and its cross-border fee 0.80%, which together can add 1.25 points to a sale on a foreign card. That is why Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards and why tourist-heavy businesses see higher effective rates in summer. Merchants who sell to international customers should ask the processor how it passes these fees through, because some bundle them and others itemize them.

Source: Processor fee schedules and merchant-statement guides from PayPros Worldwide, Tidal Commerce, PaySec and AnywherePOS, 2026. These are industry-reported ranges, not government data. Terms vary by contract.
The biggest single trap is the PCI non-compliance fee. Processors charge $20 to $50 a month, and as much as $100 at the high end, when a merchant has not filed the annual security questionnaire. At $50 a month that is $600 a year, and many processors apply it even to merchants who are compliant. Statement fees of $5 to $15 a month add $60 to $180 a year for a document the merchant can download.
Contract terms can cost more than fees. Early termination fees run $295 to $595 in the ranges reported, and some equipment leases lock merchants in for three to four years. Chargeback fees of $15 to $100 apply even when the merchant wins. Flat-rate providers such as Square, Stripe and PayPal usually avoid most of these fees, which is part of their appeal for businesses processing under $100,000 a year.

The settlement is modest on price and larger on choice. The 0.1 point cut on a $100 sale is 10 cents, and one merchant-services analysis cautions that the 1.25% cap does not mean 1.25% is the most the networks can charge. Merchants gain the right to decline premium rewards cards or commercial cards as categories, and to surcharge by card type. Objectors warned the networks could offset the cut through other fees, and the National Association of Convenience Stores said the deal lets Visa and Mastercard raise their own fees without restraint.
Preliminary approval is not final approval. Final approval is still pending, and objectors have said the 0.1 point cut is too small. Small businesses should not change checkout pricing yet. State laws also vary, and one July 2026 compliance guide says New York, New Jersey, Nevada, South Dakota, Nebraska and Georgia limit a surcharge to what the merchant actually pays. Check state rules and network disclosure requirements before adding a surcharge.

Source: Calculated from published provider rates for $240,000 in annual card sales and 4,800 transactions; interchange-plus range from industry merchant-services guides. Monthly software fees are excluded.
On $240,000 of annual card sales, flat-rate providers cost between $5,928 and $6,960, a spread of $1,032. Interchange-plus pricing typically runs 2.0% to 2.4% for established merchants, which implies $4,800 to $5,760 and savings of $1,200 to $2,160 a year against Square’s Free plan. The gap grows with volume, which is why businesses outgrow flat-rate plans as sales rise.
Four steps make the largest difference. Ask for an interchange-plus quote with the markup in writing, complete the PCI questionnaire to avoid non-compliance fees, steer customers toward debit or lower-cost cards where state law and network rules allow, and negotiate statement, monthly minimum and termination fees at signing. Review statements every quarter. Interchange tables change in April and October, and any processor markup should stay flat when they do.
