Farm Fuel Cost Statistics in US

Farm fuel cost statistics in the US 2026 show on-highway diesel at $6.179 per gallon on October 12, up $2.514 from a year ago, and USDA forecasts farm fuel and oil expenses to jump 28.8% to $21.6 billion. On October 19, USDA announced an $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief program of one-time payments, on top of the $12 billion Farmer Bridge Assistance paid earlier to more than 560,000 farmers.

Farm Fuel Cost in US 2026 – Introduction

Farm fuel cost in the US 2026 tell a story of a record-setting diesel year landing on the busiest fuel week of the farm calendar. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) put the national on-highway diesel price at $6.179 per gallon on October 12, after a record $6.529 in the week of September 21. The 2025 average was $3.660. USDA’s September forecast shows farm fuel and oil expenses rising $4.8 billion, or 28.8%, to $21.6 billion in 2026.

Washington responded in two steps. On October 5, an executive order deferred the 24.4-cent federal excise tax on highway use of dyed diesel through the end of the year. On October 19, USDA announced the $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief program. This report covers diesel prices, farm expenses, per-acre harvest costs, fertilizer, both relief actions and farm income, using USDA, EIA, White House and American Farm Bureau Federation data through October 20, 2026.

The chart shows how far diesel has moved. The 2026 average to date of $5.068 is 38% above the 2025 average of $3.660, and the latest reading of $6.179 is 69% above a year ago. The weekly low was $3.459 in January, so the national price rose 79% from that low to the September record, which was set after the Iran conflict disrupted Gulf supply.

The table pairs prices with policy. USDA expects fuel and oil to cost farms $4.8 billion more than in 2025, and the $8 billion relief program is larger than that increase. Both relief actions arrived within 14 days of each other, during the weeks when combines, grain carts and trucks burn the most diesel.

Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Weekly Retail On-Highway Diesel Price survey, week of October 12, 2026, as published through FRED; AP, October 20, 2026.

Diesel has eased only slightly from its peak. The $6.179 reading is 5.4% below the record, and the Midwest, where harvest is under way, sits at $6.259. The Midwest price rose 71% from a year earlier, so Corn Belt growers face a bigger shock than the national average suggests. Diesel is the main working fuel on the farm, and unlike gasoline it has no substitute for combines and grain trucks.

The shock traces to oil. Brent crude topped $108 a barrel in September after attacks tied to the Iran war, a pattern traced in these crude oil above $100 in the US statistics. Distillate supply is the bottleneck. Refinery constraints and Hormuz disruptions kept diesel rising even when crude eased, and diesel cost $3.69 per gallon before the war began in February.

Fuel is the fastest-growing line. The forecast fuel and oil bill of $21.6 billion is 28.8% above 2025, or $4.8 billion, while total expenses rise only 4.5%. USDA raised its 2026 expense forecast by $15.1 billion between February and September. Fertilizer, at $39.6 billion, is the record, up 15.3%.

Income did not keep pace. Net farm income of $158.4 billion is 2.6% below 2025, and 5.5% lower after inflation. Direct government payments of $47.4 billion equal 29.9% of net farm income, up 69.8%, which shows how much of the sector’s income now comes from Washington. USDA’s September forecast was released before the Harvest Fuel Relief announcement.

Source: American Farm Bureau Federation, “Diesel Costs Increase for Harvest,” October 2026. Based on a rise in Illinois farm diesel from $3.01 per gallon in September 2025 to $5.61 in September 2026, per USDA AMS.

Farm Bureau modeled a $2.60 per gallon increase, which is 86% above the September 2025 farm diesel price of $3.01. The average corn farm covers 279 acres and burns about 3.07 gallons per acre across harvest work, or 857 gallons, so the increase adds roughly $2,227 to its harvest diesel bill. Per acre, soybeans add $3.56 and corn $7.98.

Specialty crops take the largest hit. Apple harvest adds $57.59 per acre, almonds $18.67 and potatoes $18.23. Iowa State found a combine’s cost rose from $46.36 to $49.88 per acre when diesel moved from $2.89 to $4.68, an 8% increase, and to $51.39 at $5.45. CoBank estimates a farmer must now sell about 5 bushels of corn to cover an acre’s fuel, up from 3 a year ago.

Fertilizer followed fuel upward. Urea at New Orleans rose from under $500 per ton before the war to over $650 in March, and Illinois anhydrous reached $915.50 per ton in August, 16% above 2025. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization warned that the Middle East war could lift global fertilizer prices by 15% to 20% in the first half of 2026, because the region exports large volumes of nitrogen.

Farm Bureau estimates corn producers face about $19 per acre more for diesel and $7 per acre more for fertilizer because of the Hormuz closures. That whole-season diesel figure is larger than the $7.98 harvest-only estimate because it counts planting, spraying and hauling. Farmers who skipped fall applications may pay again next spring, and farmdoc found fall fertilizer for the 2027 crop is costlier than in either of the past two years.

Red Dye Diesel Order 2026: How the Tax Deferral Works

Provision Detail
Signed October 5, 2026
Covers Highway use of dyed (red) diesel
Tax deferred 24.4 cents per gallon federal excise tax
Window October 5 to December 31, 2026, no interest or penalties
Savings per 250-gallon fill About $60 (White House)
With a matching state suspension Over $100 per fill
Average state diesel tax 35.5 cents per gallon
Projected farmer savings this harvest $640 million (administration estimate)

Source: White House fact sheet and executive order, October 5, 2026; USDA; AgriNews, October 17, 2026; CNN reporting on state diesel taxes.

The order defers rather than eliminates the tax. Only Congress can repeal an excise tax, so the Treasury Secretary was told to hold off collecting it from October 5 through December 31 and to explore ways to cancel the deferred amount. Dyed diesel, chemically identical to highway fuel, is normally limited to off-road equipment. Bought in bulk it already costs 60 to 70 cents per gallon less than clear diesel at a station.

Economists flagged one risk. If many highway drivers switch to dyed fuel, supply of the red product could tighten and push its price up for farmers. Diesel supply policy is moving on other fronts too, as in the diesel supply deal between the US and Russia, where the national price is tracked against inventories. Illinois and Indiana also eased their own rules on October 5.

Source: USDA press release, “Trump Administration Announces $8 Billion Harvest Fuel Relief Program,” October 19, 2026; Reuters; Agri-Pulse.

The program is built like the earlier bridge payments. USDA says payments will follow a uniform formula to cover a portion of modeled losses during the 2026 crop year, with no payment rates or deadlines yet announced. Funding comes from the Commodity Credit Corporation, and the Farm Service Agency will administer it. Together with the $12 billion bridge program, USDA has now announced $20 billion in one-time aid this year.

Compare the aid with the cost. The $8 billion equals 37% of USDA’s forecast $21.6 billion fuel and oil bill and about 1.7 times the $4.8 billion increase, though USDA frames it as relief for “increased input costs” and market disruption, not for fuel alone. Specialty growers, who sit outside the main commodity programs, were asked to submit fuel data, and payments to them will depend on what USDA finds.

Farm Income and Government Payments 2026: Who Absorbs the Cost

Cash receipts | █████████████████████████████████████████████████ 540.3
Production expenses | █████████████████████████████████████████████ 492.8
Net farm income | ████████████████ 158.4
Government payments | █████ 47.4
Measure 2026 Forecast
Cash receipts $540.3 billion
Production expenses $492.8 billion
Net farm income $158.4 billion
Net cash farm income $176.4 billion
Government payments share of net farm income 29.9%
Farm fuel share of total expenses 4.4% ($21.6B of $492.8B)

Source: USDA Economic Research Service, Farm Sector Income Forecast, September 3, 2026; fuel share calculated from ERS figures.

Fuel is a small share of the bill but a fast-moving one. At 4.4% of production expenses, it is far smaller than feed, livestock purchases or labor, yet its 28.8% rise accounts for $4.8 billion of the $21.2 billion total expense increase, or 23%. Government payments of $47.4 billion now equal almost 30% of net farm income, before any Harvest Fuel Relief payments are counted.

Costs do not stay on the farm. Growers can pass little of an input shock to buyers, because crop prices are set in commodity markets, but trucking and processing costs reach consumers over time. How much of that arrives at the register is tracked in these US prices statistics. For farms, the question is whether relief payments cover costs through harvest and into spring planning.
