Alaska LNG Project Statistics 2026 | Pipeline Route, Cost, Capacity, Taiwan Deal & Key Facts

Alaska LNG Project

Alaska LNG is a proposed 807-mile, 42-inch gas pipeline from the North Slope to an export terminal at Nikiski on Cook Inlet, designed to produce 20 million metric tons of LNG a year at an estimated cost of $44.5 billion to $54.5 billion. On October 14, 2026, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs said state-owned CPC plans to buy 6 million tonnes a year, or 30% of capacity, and invest up to $4.4 billion, but the terms are still under negotiation and a final investment decision on the pipeline has not been made.

Alaska LNG Project 2026 – Introduction

Alaska LNG Project read like a wish list that keeps getting closer to reality. The idea of piping North Slope gas to tidewater is almost fifty years old, and earlier versions collapsed on cost. Glenfarne Group now leads the project with a 75% stake, the State of Alaska holds 25%, and six overseas buyers have signed preliminary agreements. This month the story moved fast: President Trump announced a Taiwan commitment at a rally in Wasilla, and Taiwan’s government followed with numbers.

The project is still far from steel in the ground. No final investment decision has been taken, buyers have signed nonbinding papers, and South Korea says it has made no firm commitment despite a $54 billion claim from Washington. Costs rank among the highest of any LNG project ever proposed in the United States. This report covers the route, cost, capacity, offtake, the Taiwan deal, US LNG market data and Alaska’s political hurdles, one data table at a time.

Glenfarne split the project into two financially separate phases. Phase One builds the pipeline and sends gas to Alaska’s homes and utilities, which Glenfarne says can begin in 2029 after mechanical completion in 2028. Phase Two adds the terminal and gas treatment plant, with exports around 2031. Published lengths differ: 807 miles is the full route, about 765 miles is the domestic leg, and one report cited 739 miles.

Engineering has moved forward. Glenfarne hired Worley to complete engineering and cost validation, and the developer says design work is sufficient for a pipeline decision. The project is described as the only federally authorized export terminal on the US Pacific Coast. A January 2025 executive order told agencies to prioritize Alaska LNG for allies in the Asia-Pacific region, and Taiwan’s ministry says shipping from Alaska takes a direct Pacific route, and a 2025 report put the voyage at about 10 days. Glenfarne’s permitted North American LNG portfolio totals 32.8 million tonnes a year under development across Alaska, Louisiana and Texas, so the company is not a first-time developer.

Money is the central question. At $44.5 billion to $54.5 billion, Alaska LNG would be one of the most expensive export projects ever proposed, and the pipeline alone costs $13.2 billion to $16.9 billion. Glenfarne wants to take a final investment decision on the pipeline in 2026 and on the terminal in 2027. It says it needs lender and investor documentation to take 90 to 120 days after the last conditions are met. Reuters notes the project would cost more per tonne than any US export plant proposed.

Supply and demand are lining up on paper. Glenfarne has gas precedent agreements with ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Hilcorp and Great Bear Pantheon, including a 30-year agreement with ConocoPhillips announced on May 18, 2026. On the buyer side it holds preliminary deals for 13 million tonnes of the 16 million it needs. Glenfarne’s chief executive has named two conditions before a decision, and one is approval by the Regulatory Commission of Alaska of a gas supply agreement with the utility Enstar.

Plant capacity is 20 million tonnes a year, and Glenfarne wants 16 million, or 80%, under long-term contract before closing financing. As of its February 26, 2026 announcement it had 13 million tonnes accounted for under preliminary agreements with TotalEnergies, JERA, Tokyo Gas, CPC, PTT and POSCO. Tokyo Gas signed a letter of intent for 1 million tonnes in October 2025, and TotalEnergies signed one for 2 million.

These are not binding contracts. The Alaska LNG chart shows how much of the plant would depend on Asian buyers, and CPC’s 6 million tonnes is the largest single volume named. The Taiwan ministry says the investment and purchase terms remain subject to further negotiation, and no binding sales contract exists. Until contracts turn firm, the 13 million tonnes is a measure of interest rather than revenue.

Trump told a rally in Wasilla that Taiwan had agreed to buy 30% of the gas for the next 20 years, and Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs followed on October 14 with its own numbers: 6 million tonnes a year and up to $4.4 billion of investment. The ministry says deliveries could begin in 2032 if the schedule holds. It also says no final decision exists on investment terms, ownership stakes or commercial agreements. Sources say a heads of agreement could be signed as soon as next week.

Taiwan has its own reasons to move. The island faces pressure from Beijing, relies on LNG for power as AI demand grows, and wants shorter, safer routes. After the Strait of Hormuz crisis of 2026, Taiwan’s share of US-sourced LNG jumped from about 11% to nearly 40% within two months. The deal also sits inside a wider trade bargain, and the Taiwan tariff statistics report covers the $500 billion investment pledge and 15% tariff rate.

South Korea is the open question. Trump said last week that Seoul would put $54 billion into Alaska LNG as part of a $200 billion energy package inside the $350 billion trade deal, but South Korean officials say they have made no firm commitment and need to assess the project’s commercial viability. The Alaska Beacon reported on October 1 that Korean officials confirmed no deal exists. POSCO International’s preliminary offtake agreement is the only Korean signature so far, and the South Korea tariffs report lays out the trade backdrop behind those pledges.

Japan and Thailand are further along on paper. JERA and Tokyo Gas, Japan’s largest power generator and largest city gas supplier, signed preliminary agreements, and Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production did too. TotalEnergies added a 2 million tonne letter of intent. Glenfarne’s task through year-end is to turn those papers into firm sales contracts for the missing 3 million tonnes needed to reach 16 million.

The Asian buyers behind Alaska LNG are already leaning on US supply. US LNG exports averaged 17.4 Bcf/d in the first half of 2026, up 23% and the fastest growth since large-scale exports began in 2016. Shipments to Asia more than doubled, up 108% or 2.3 Bcf/d. In June, Asia took 38.7% of US cargoes, ahead of Europe for the first time since August 2024. About 20% of global LNG trade passed through the Strait of Hormuz in 2024, and the 2026 disruption pushed buyers toward the Americas.

Gulf Coast plants carry the load, and the LNG export statistics in the US report tracks them terminal by terminal. Golden Pass LNG began exporting in April 2026, adding 0.7 Bcf/d of nominal capacity. The EIA expects exports of 17.3 Bcf/d in the second half of 2026 and 18.7 Bcf/d in the first half of 2027. Alaska LNG would add a Pacific-facing supply point for buyers who want a shorter route than the Panama Canal or Cape of Good Hope.

The biggest local fight is taxes. Alaska levies a 20 mill property tax, about 2% a year, on oil and gas infrastructure, and Glenfarne says that sits well above rates faced by comparable plants. It wants a much smaller levy on gas throughput, a cut of 80% to 90% that would cost state and local governments more than $10 billion over 30 years. The North Slope Borough has raised concerns because the gas treatment plant sits in its territory, and legislators have asked for updated cost data.

Politics will not wait. The project has become an issue in Alaska’s midterm Senate race, and the Commerce Department has not said whether its Investment Accelerator, which oversees more than $1 trillion of Japanese, South Korean and Taiwanese pledges, will lead on the pipeline. Investors remain cautious, as the Financial Times reported, because the cost is high and the buyers are non-binding. If Glenfarne meets its two remaining conditions, it moves into a 90 to 120 day documentation period and then a decision.
